Marc Bauer

Born in 1975 in Geneva, Switzerland, Marc Bauer lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. His drawings, installations and videos suggest a mix of childhood memories and fantasies that repeatedly transgresses taboos. Bauer’s works unsettle a traditional understanding of morality and disrupt the landmarks of social behavior. His disturbing imagery is depicted using deliberately simplified lines, which lend his subject matter a mundane quality. This technique reminds us that violence is often committed in anonymous living rooms around us. Regarding his series on teenagers “Happier Healthier” (2004), Bauer has said: “How to behave in front of these images? Please, keep up appearances pretend that these drawings are funny, but don't be fooled, it might serious, it might have happened”.

Recent solo exhibitions include “Panorama, Todtnauberg” as part of Art Statements at Art 39 Basel (2008), “Stomme Doos” at Substitut, Berlin (2008), “History of Masculinity, Epilogue” at attitudes, espace d'arts contemporains, Geneva (2007) and “History of Masculinity IV, Abendland” at Praz-Delavallade, Paris (2007). His work has also been shown as part of “Shifting Identities” at Kunsthaus Zürich (2008), “Gegen Den Strich” at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2007), “Drôles de je” at FRAC Alsace, Selestat, France
(2007) and “Buenos Días Santiago - an exhibition as expedition” at MAC - Museum of contemporary art, Santiago de Chile (2005). He has been awarded the Manor Prize, Geneva (2009).
