Alicia Framis (b.1967, Barcelona) lives and works in Amsterdam and Barcelona. Her installations and performances question the rigid structures of our contemporary societies. In 'Remix Building', she makes proposals for different ways to associate spaces and activities: 'Sushi Bar/ Blood Bank' couples a fish restaurant and a fully operational blood bank, a convivial and a medical space. 'A Cemetery in the Tube', suggested for the station Chatelet-les Halles in Paris put the mourning of the deaths right within the of buzz urban life. Another project, 'Anti-dog', tackles the issue of women protection with a collection of dog-bite, bullet and fire resistant clothes. The artist draws a multi-faceted portrait of women; between the dream of the woman-princess and the reality of urban violence.
Alicia Framis’ work has the strength and the poetry of symbols. Both grave and witty, it offers drastic rethinking of our social reality.
Alicia Framis has been shown extensively including: Victime de la mode - Fashion Victim, Crac Alsace, Altkirch (2006); On Mobility, De Appel, Amsterdam (2005); Hors d’oeuvre : ordre et désordres de la nourriture, capc Musée d'art contemporain, Bordeaux (2005); We are the world, Museum Boijmas, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2004); Anti_dog, Centre d’Art La Panera, Lleida, Spain, (2004); Fantastic, MassMoca, Massachusetts, USA, (2003) We are the world, Venice Biennale Dutch Pavilion, Venice, Italy, (2003).
