Alexandre da Cunha
Alexandre da Cunha (b.1969, Rio de Janeiro) lives and works in London. His sculptures reinvent misused objects, in a mechanism perhaps similar to the way developing countries micro-economies process discarded objects in second-hand markets or street shops. In Alexandre's work, cut plastic bottles become a glittering set of glassware, a shopping trolley is painted with luxurious car paint. In recent 'paintings' he  collages brightly coloured floor polishing mops to create elegantly composed constructivist canvases. Humorous and witty, these pieces not only provide mundane objects with a new sense of purpose but may also mirror destitute people’s creative dreams of social improvements.

In 2005, Alexandre da Cunha had solo shows at Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte and at Vilma Gold, London. He was shown in many international exhibitions such as: Around the World in Eighty Days, ICA/South London Gallery, London (2006); Prague Biennale 2, Prague (2005); Fragmentos e Souvenirs Paulistanos Vol. 1, Galeria Luisa Strina, Sao Paulo Paralela, Sao Paulo, (2004); Imagine Limerick, EV+A 2004, Limerick, (2004); Produciendo Realidad, Prometeo Associazione Culturale, Lucca, (2004); Sneeze Project 80 x 80, Gazon Rouge Gallery, Athens, (2004); 50th Venice Biennale, The Structure of Survival, Venice, (2003); The Virgin Show, The Wrong Gallery, New York, (2003); The Lost Collection of An Invisible Man, The Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, (2003); PoT, Galeria Fortes Vilaca, Sao Paulo, (2003); Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, (2002) and Materia Prima, Novo Museu, Curitiba.

He is represented by Galeria Luisa Strina and Vilma Gold, London.
