Maja Bajevic

Born in 1967 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maja Bajevic lives and works in Paris and Sarajevo. Using various media including video, light installation, photography and performance, Bajevic offers a critical insight into today’s social and political climate. Her video “Double Bubble” (2001) addresses the concept of religious ideal, contrasting the values promoted by organized religions with a series of crimes committed “in the name of god”. Bajevic’s sound installation “Avanti Popolo” (2002-2005) is composed of patriotic songs from 30 different countries. Taking the viewer through a cacophonic sound-scape, the work questions the paradoxical nature of anthems, which enhance a sense of collective belonging but also lend themselves to ideological designs.

Maja Bajevic has recent and up-coming exhibitions at Kunsthaus Glarus, Switzerland (2009), Galerie Peter Kilchmann, Zürich (2009), Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice (2008), Galerie Michel Rein, Paris (2007) and PS1, New York (2004). Her work has also been shown as part of Documenta 12, Kassel (2007), “Airs de Paris” at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2007), the 2nd Moscow Biennial (2007), the 7th Sharjah Biennal (2005) as well as the Bosnian Pavilion for the 50th Venice Biennale (2003).

Maja Bajevic is represented by Peter Kilchmann Gallery, Zurich and Galerie Michele Rein, Paris, France.
